Treaty of Waitangi Claim - Terms Signed
On Wednesday 17 March , 150 years to the day the Crown first fired shots at Te Kohia Paa, the TAIA Executive and the Crown signed a Terms of Negotiation.
The signing was at Owae Marae, Waitara, and was attended by some 200 Te Atiawa members and supporters.
The ceremony began with a whero and a haka powhiri by the students of Manukorihi Intermediate, Waitara.
After the powhiri there were speeches by Grant Knuckey - on behalf of TAIA - and the Prime Minister, John Key, on behalf of the Crown.
During the signing the students of Manukorihi Intermediate, and Iwi members, sang waiata from Te Atiawa, Taranaki and Parihaka. The waiata were accompanied by the Parihaka drum played by Kuia Whero Bailey. Te Atiawa supporters were also encouraged to sign the Terms of Negotiation.
The ceremony concluded with a kai hakari.
Mannkitanga was provided by the Ngaia Whanau who were at Owae Marae for a Whanau Reunion.
