Te Atiawa is also in the negotiation phase and post settlement planning was well underway.

"What we are trying to do is learn from other iwi We speak to other iwi abput what has worked and what hasn't. Over the next 12 to 18 months strategic plans and polcies will be put in place. We don't want to reinvent the wheel but we want to be in a pretty good position to maximise this settlement as much as we can for members."

The Trust would also employ financial advisers. "We will definitely get a team of experts to manage our assets for us"

"Treaty settlements were both good for the iwi and for the province " she said "Most of the money is going to stay here, its not going anywhere else."

TARANAKI MAORI TRUST BOARD

The Taranaki Maori Trust Board was established in the 1940s or 1950s as a result of the receommendations of the Sim Commission. The Sim Commission was the enquiry into the Land Wars in the 1920s.

It was set up to receive compensation and has been operating ever since. The eight Iwi of Taranaki are representred although the TMTB is responsible to the Minister of Maori Affairs.

For the last 18 months or so the TMTB has been consulting about a way forward with the options being

* to devolve completely OR * to remain but have a makeover.

Consultation is still continuing.

ELECTION

The TMTB will be having an election shortly .

The current Te Atiawa representative is Kura Denness. Kura is very supportive of TAIA and recently supported the TAIA application for a grant to assist with Claims expenses.

MEETING WITH THE MINISTER

At the meeting TAIA presented a document which outlined Te Atiawa expectations for an Agreement In Principle
The Minister advised that he was looking forward to intensifying negotiations and that he was working on quantum paper to take to Cabinet - the offer to TAIA is expected in April
TAIA also met Hon Rick Barker who has been chosen by the Minister to be the Crown negotiator
The Mayor of the New Plymouth District, Harry Duynhoven was also present at the meeting at TAIA's invitation (the meeting was held at the NPDC Chamber)
After the meeting the Minister held a meeting with the chairpersons of the eight Taranaki Iwi to talk about the Maunga settlement.
The Minister is keen to move on to the Maunga settlement once all of the eight Taranaki Iwi have settled their Treaty Claim.

TAIA now Charitable

TAIA is now registered with the Charities Commission and means we can take advantage of this status to obtain grants . TAIA will , of course, meet its compliance commitments.

TAIA AGM HELD

The TAIA AGM was held on Saturday 28 January at Owae Marae, Waitara . The Financial Statements for the 2009 - 2010 and the 2010 - 2011 years were approved by members. Copies of the AGM papers are available to members on request.

UPDATE HUI

TAIA has just completed Treaty Update Hui in the following locations:

* Hamilton

* Rotorua

* Auckland

* Wellington

* Christchurch

* Picton

* Taranaki

The aims of the Hui were to update members and get support for the progress so far. Both aims were achieved and the majority of members are supportive.

The Hui were held jointly with Ngaruahine and part of the Korero was to advise members of the good working relationship between the three Taranaki Iwi - Te Atiawa , Ngaruahine and Taranaki - going through negotiations and the significant regional potential of future relationships.
